Limited-Risk AI Systems (Transparency Obligations)

You have five months before the Phase Two deadline. Here is the priority sequence.
Immediate (This Month)
1. Complete an AI inventory. Catalog every AI system your organization develops, deploys, or uses. Include third-party AI tools and APIs. You cannot assess compliance without a complete inventory.
2. Assign a compliance owner. Designate a person or team responsible for EU AI Act compliance. This should not be buried in legal. It requires cross-functional authority spanning engineering, product, legal, and operations.
3. Classify each system. Map every AI system in your inventory to the EU AI Act risk categories. Be conservative in borderline cases. Treating a system as high-risk when it might be limited-risk is far less expensive than the reverse.
Next 30 Days
4. Gap analysis for high-risk systems. For each high-risk system, evaluate your current state against the Act’s requirements: risk management, data governance, documentation, logging, transparency, human oversight, accuracy, and security. Identify gaps.

7. Implement technical requirements. Build or upgrade logging systems, human oversight mechanisms, and transparency features for high-risk systems. This is engineering work that cannot be shortcut.
8. Create required documentation. Develop technical documentation, instructions for use, and conformity declarations for each high-risk system. Use the Act’s Annex IV as your template.
9. Begin conformity assessment. Initiate the self-assessment or third-party assessment process depending on your system category.
